The
Toledo Metropolitan Area Council of Governments (TMACOG) will hold a full-day
seminar on the topic of Lake Erie’s harmful algal blooms Thursday, January 22,
8 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., at the TMACOG offices in the Grand Lobby of the Dr. Martin
Luther King, Jr. Plaza. The seminar is
part of a series of programs about Lake Erie that have been organized by the
TMACOG Environmental Council. The January 22 meeting will describe both sources
of harmful algal blooms and solutions to the problems as they are currently
understood.
Presentations
from experts will address unexpected economic impacts of harmful algal blooms;
strategies for reducing nutrients from both agricultural and municipal sources;
case studies exploring green infrastructure solutions; and methods of communicating
to the public and changing behavior.
The
keynote speaker is Ms. Dereth Glance,
Commissioner of the International Joint Commission (IJC). The IJC is a
cooperative office of the United States and Canada staffed by three
commissioners from each country. The IJC has two main responsibilities:
regulating shared water uses and investigating transboundary issues and
recommending solutions. Ohio State Senator
Randy Gardner is also expected to speak.
Elected
officials, concerned public citizens, and professionals working to protect
water quality are invited to attend and participate.
Registration
is required. Click here. The $25 fee includes meals. Contact TMACOG Vice President of
Environmental Planning Kurt Erichsen at 419.241.9155 ext. 128 to register.
